GM Presence in Australia.

Cadillac is a part of GM and it has its presence in Australia for a long time. From Holden to HSV, GM has a sold vehicles in both passenger and performance segments. The last Cadillac was sold in Australia in the year 1969, but it appears that the iconic brand is set to return to Australian shores with an all electric SUV. In 2008-2009 Cadillac planned to launch in Australia, but the GFC forced GM to change its decision. The Cadillac brand is well known in the US for its large SUV Escalade, it is a premium version of GM’s body-on-frame Chevrolet SUV. Cadillac will compete with the luxury brands like Lexus, Audi, BMW and Benz, when launched in Australia.

Cadillac Lyriq EV on Australian Shores

In 2022, GM sourced Australian trademarks for both the logo and name of the Cadillac Lyriq an all electric SUV. These are indications that the iconic brand is finally taking big steps to launch in Australia. It could start of with Cadillac Lyriq EV and eventually bring the Hummer EV and the electric Silverado ute. The LYRIQ is an electric SUV currently sold in the USA. It has a driving range of up to 600km. In US it competes with both the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. GM has performed a lot of work to identify potential opportunities in Australia. In Feb 2023, videos were published online showing the right hand drive models in the US.

Unlike the Escalade, Cadillac Lyriq EV is a new segment, an all electric SUV by GM. Its a family sized luxury SUV that looks handsome from every angle. Built on a modern EV bespoke Ultium EV platform. This platform is designed by GM to compete with EV’s all over world. In a recent statement by Shilpan Armin Sr. VP and President GM International, the conversion between left-had drive and right-hand drive electric vehicles was the key motive in designing electric vehicles. During the research and development phase they found it much simpler compared to vehicles manufactured with a front engine.

Power and Specifications

The single electric motor that powers the Lyriq EV rear-wheel drive develops 254 kW and 440 Nm of torque. The dual motor All-Wheel drive Lyriq has an impressive 373kw and 610Nm of torque. GM claims this EV has a driving range of 494km to 505 km between charges depending on each variant. The EV is capable of doing a 0-100 km/h in 6.0 seconds. Lyriq is powered by the Ultium EV battery platform, it was designed to delivery a sporty performance, that makes this highly responsive and agile to drive.
